BEVERLY HILLS– Screening of DANZÓN (1991) with a pre-show performance of Danzón dance by Grupo Neiya, and followed by a panel.

In María Novaro’s subtle film, Julia (María Rojo), a telephone operator and single mother living a sterile existence in Mexico City, finds escape in weekly ballroom dance sessions with a regular partner, Carmelo (Daniel Rergis). When Carmelo goes missing, the surprising void in her life prompts Julia to travel to Veracruz to find him. During her search, she gains an unexpected friend in transvestite Susy (Tito Vasconcelos) and learns to treasure her independence.

En esta delicada trama de la cineasta María Novaro, Julia (María Rojo), una operadora de teléfono y madre soltera, vive una existencia estéril en Ciudad de México donde encuentra un escape en las clases de daza que toma con su pareja de baile, Carmelo (Daniel Rergis). Cuando Carmelo se desaparece, suple el sorpresivo vacío de su vida la con un viaje a Veracruz donde espera encontrarlo. Durante su búsqueda, se hace amiga de un inesperado amigo, el travesti Sisy (Tito Vasconcelos) y aprende a valorar su independencia.
