BEVERLY HILLS– PAN’S LABYRINTH (2006)

October 30, 2017 @ 7:30 pm9:00 pm

$3 – $5

BEVERLY HILLS– Screening of Academy Film Archive 35mm print. 112 minutes.

Panelists: producer Bertha Navarro*, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro (schedules permitting).

Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. Produced by del Toro, Bertha Navarro, Alfonso Cuarón, Frida Torresblanco, Alvaro Augustín.

Cast: Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, Ivana Baquero, Alex Angulo, Doug Jones.

Guillermo del Toro weaves together horror, fantasy, political parable and family drama in a film that won three Academy Awards, including Art Direction and Cinematography, and was nominated for three more, including Best Foreign Language Film. Lush and riveting, the film explores the effects of a bloody civil war on not only adults and soldiers, but on families and children. As a young girl named Ofelia enters a fantasy world that thrusts her into an epic battle between good and evil, the adults in her real world attempt to outwit her stepfather, a sadistic officer in Franco’s army. We see del Toro’s ability to show these extraordinary tales, as his craftsmanship is on full display: the richness of his visual imagery communicates the darkness of life in the aftermath of war in contrast with the lushness of myth and fantasy.
