Preparations for California Reads 2014, which will focus on best-selling veteran author Karl Marlantes’ What It Is Like to Go to War, in alignment with War Comes Home, our new initiative to raise public awareness, understanding, and support for reintegrating veterans into our communities, are well underway. Grant awards to California public library systems, to support community-based programs in Fall 2014 built around the book and related topics, will be announced in December.
Discussion guides, online interviews, curriculum materials, and other resources to support participation in the statewide read will be made available beginning next spring. Stay tuned for information about events and activities being planned for summer and fall 2014 by libraries and other programming partners.
CA Reads is a project of Cal Humanities, conducted in partnership with the California Center for the Book. The project is supported in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Bay Tree Foundation, and the Whitman Institute.
