We’re very pleased to conclude another year of grantmaking by announcing the awards for our first Humanities for All Quick Grant round (October 25 deadline). We received almost 150 applications from across the state for projects that will respond to the needs and interests of Californians, encourage greater public participation in humanities programming, particularly by new and/or underserved audiences, and promotes understanding and empathy among all our state’s peoples in order to cultivate a thriving democracy. The reviewers were impressed by the depth, variety, and creativity shown by the entire application pool.

34 outstanding public humanities project proposals received awards of up to $5,000, totaling $165,000. These new projects will touch every region of the state, and represent a wide range of topics, programming approaches, and community partners, ranging from a series of public programs organized by a public radio station to help the community better understand and respond to homeless people in the Sierra foothill region; to a film-and-discussion series hosted by the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco that will explore the impact of Black culture on the “Summer of Love” on the occasion of its 50th anniversary;  to an intergenerational oral history project developed by a San Bernardino County public library which will collect and share stories of local Latino veterans.

Three projects received “Exploring the Legacy of Race and Ethnicity in California” awards, through special support provided by an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. These are marked on the list below with an asterisk (*). For more detailed descriptions, please click here

California Humanities congratulates the project directors, team members, and sponsoring organizations and partners, and looks forward to seeing these projects unfold. Please visit our website for updated information about their events and activities. Our next Quick Grant deadline will be in March 2017.
