Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with Launch of The Harlem of the West SF Project

April 29, 2017 @ 3:00 pm7:00 pm

SAN FRANCISCO and OAKLAND – In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month (April) and Jazz Day (April 30), Elizabeth Pepin Silva and Lewis Watts will be speaking and signing books at two Bay Area locations in conjunction with the launch of THE HARLEM OF THE WEST SF PROJECT. THE HARLEM OF THE WEST SF PROJECT is a book, website and photographic exhibit that celebrates the bustling Fillmore jazz era of the 1940s and 1950s, a period when the Fillmore was a vibrant neighborhood of more than two dozen nightclubs and music venues within its one square mile – all of which virtually vanished due to redevelopment in the 1960s. The project celebrates a unique and rediscovered chapter in jazz history and the African American experience on the West Coast. Book and website release parties and remounting of the Harlem of the West SF exhibit:

• Saturday, April 29, 3-7 pm African American Art & Culture Complex 762 Fulton St. San Francisco, CA 94102

• Sunday, April 30, 2-4pm Marcus Books 3900 M.L.K. Jr. Way Oakland, CA 94609 Talk and book signing only.

In conjunction San Francisco African American Historical & Cultural Society and the San Francisco Public Library.

The exhibition will be on public view April 29 – June 1, 2017

Admission is FREE. Monday through Friday, 9am-8pm and on Saturdays from 9am-5pm. The new www.harlemofthewestsf.com website will go live Saturday, April 29, 2017
