CHICO EXHIBITION–No Word for “Art”: Contemporary Hmong-American Art in Northern California

CHICO EXHIBITION–The concept for No Word for “Art” came from Hmong-American artist and co-curator, Elizabeth Lee. There is no word for “art” in the Hmong language, which can make it difficult to explain what fine art is to older Hmong generations. Many Hmong-American youth are discouraged from creative careers by the older members of the family. This is a story that is unfortunately repeated across cultures currently, and many people are afraid to pursue art as their career though it is their passion. As a society, how do we value art? This exhibition will explore the complexities of Hmong-American identity from the perspective of artists throughout the north state, and provide opportunities for conversations regarding the significance of art. This exhibition is curated by Elizabeth Lee and Stacey Lo and sponsored by KAWM.
