DAVIS– See what it was like to live and play in the California Central Valley in the mid-19th century. Following a brief lecture and Q&A session about early California life around Sacramento, Central Valley Vintage Base Ball will be exhibiting how America’s pastime was played in its infancy by farmers and ranchers in the Sacramento Valley in a pair of exhibition-style events.

From Central Valley Vintage Base Ball:
History and culture come alive as four historically re-created base ball clubs engage each other in spirited matches in Davis. At 9:30am, stop by and listen to Founder and Director Matt “Brandywine” Stone speak about how the game was played in 1864 and what changes were made over time and why. He’ll also speak about lifestyle in general in this area at that time. Most people know about the Gold Rush, but what happened when the gold was gone? “Brandywine” will explain how the agriculture industry boomed and how those fields that ran fallow on a given year became base ball fields of dreams. At 10:00 am, the Oleta Base Ball Club of Davisville will play a game of 1864 base ball against the Athletic Base Ball Club of Woodland. Then, as a bonus, at 12:00 pm, the Sacramento Base Ball Club will play against the Aetna Base Ball Club of Dixon. All of these teams are historic re-creations and we’re all playing for recreation and education. Come out and enjoy a unique opportunity to learn about life and base ball in California’s earliest of years.
