EAST CONTRA COSTA COUNTY– The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande

ANTIOCH, BRENTWOOD, OAKLEY and PREWETT–Libraries in East Contra Costa County will participate in a community-wide read of the autobiography The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande. We invite community members to pick up a free copy of the book in English or Spanish at the Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley and Prewett libraries beginning October 2^nd (October 3^rd at Oakley and Prewett) and to read about the author’s life before and after coming from Mexico to the United States as an undocumented immigrant. The book is an inspirational coming-of-age story about the pursuit of a better life. Community reads seek to knit generations together, capture the collective imagination of family, friends, and neighbors, and bridge the boundaries of communities and cultures. Reading encourages the discussions that make friends, deepen relationships and provide the context for profound self-education, and a respectful sharing of ideas. America’s public libraries have played an important role in welcoming newcomers throughout our history. This program will build on that legacy by building capacity within California libraries to develop creative and innovative programs that will respond to the needs and circumstances of today’s immigrants and immigrant communities and foster more inclusive communities within our state. The Library Innovation Lab pilot project will provide training, support, and resources to a cohort of programming librarians, enabling them to design and implement new public humanities projects that will reach and engage underserved immigrant groups in their communities during the program period. Through an open call application, 10 libraries were selected to receive $5,000 each to participate in our first round of the Library Innovation Lab grant program. This grants program will help build capacity within California libraries to develop creative and innovative programs that will respond to the needs and circumstances of today’s immigrants and immigrant communities and foster more inclusive communities within our state.
