Photo Credit: Chante, Home Away From HomeEUREKA– Learn the stories of college students and their resilience as they experienced homelessness while attending Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods. Photos and narrative stories will be shared during the Eureka Arts Alive Stigma Reduction Event.Housing security among college students is emerging as a local as well as statewide issue. In three recent studies conducted with Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods students, between 11%-16% of respondents reported they experienced homelessness at some point since starting college. Housing insecurity and homelessness issues impacts students’ ability to stay enrolled and graduate. College students who have experienced homelessness at some point during their college education face many challenges, however they also experience resilience leading to success in their educational endeavors. The Humboldt County Homeless College Student Photovoice Project sought to explore and understand the supportive and resiliency factors related to homeless college students and their success through Photovoice and narrative inquiry. Throughout the Spring 2018 semester, students were equipped with portable cameras to take pictures of what resiliency looked like to them during their time being without housing. After photos were developed, students shared stories and engaged in narrative analysis about their experiences. The collection of photos and stories aims to honor homeless student experiences from their lens, highlight the challenges faced in our rural community related to housing particularly for college students, and seeksolutions through action research. The collection hopes to offer honest visual data for key stakeholders with the goal of creating change and building upon the supportive and resilience factors students identified in their stories. The gallery of photos and stories represent the stories of 8 students ranging in age from 18-55, 2 of whom had prior history being homeless while the other 6 became homeless either upon arrival to Humboldt County or after beginning classes.
