"The understanding of a culture comes from hearing the language, tasting the food, seeing personal interactions, experiencing the traditions, and so much more when it is in context."

OAKLAND EXHIBIT–Through contemporary art and writings, traveling exhibit “Textures of Remembrance: Vietnamese Artists and Writers Reflect on the Vietnamese Diaspora” explores a date that impacts many Vietnamese Americans: April 30, 1975, the end of the Vietnam War. Featuring works by 25 Vietnamese artists and writers, “Textures of Remembrance” presents an intimate perspective of this diasporic experience. The creative pieces showcased here – curated by the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network – reveal personal struggles and memories, demonstrating the continued effects of the Vietnam War on identity, sense of family and community, and representation. Importantly, this exhibition shares works made within and for the Vietnamese diasporic community to humanize the refugee experience from the inside-out. April 15-June 10, 2022 On display at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, 388 Ninth St., Suite 290, Oakland, CA 94607. The exhibition is FREE to view during OACC opening hours (Wednesdays – Saturdays, 12–5 pm). Viewing appointments outside of typical opening hours are available upon request.
