LOS ANGELES– Cops and Communities Panel Discussion and Demonstration
September 26, 2018 @ 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm
LOS ANGELES–As part of its initiative to build healthy, resilient communities, non-profit organization Center for Council will host a free, public panel discussion exploring and documenting the disparate, yet interconnected, stories and experiences of police officers and community activists in Southern California. The discussion will explore opportunities for creating a more engaged, collaborative relationship and a safer environment for everyone. These community conversations are critical building blocks in deepening understanding, reducing systematized police violence and rebuilding trust and compassion in community-police relations.
The panel discussion is a culmination of “Cops and Communities: Circling Up,” a Center for Council project bringing together community leaders and police officers in an immersive day-long Council workshop. Using Council, a compassion-driven dialogue practice, participants will explore common ground within their diverse experiences, celebrating their shared challenges, triumphs and aspirations. The workshop is intended to provide individuals on the front lines of highly-charged community interactions a space to shift from an “us-versus-them” mentality to a celebration of shared humanity, uncovering new ways to deepen and strengthen communities in conflict moving forward. During the public panel discussion at the LA River Center and Gardens, officers and community leaders will reflect on their time in the Council workshop and discuss their experience of coming together to explore opportunities to build trust, mitigate implicit bias, and move toward a unified vision for community health. The event is free and open to the public. Following the panel, audience members will be invited to participate in small Council circles that will be co-facilitated by law enforcement officers and community leaders, experiencing for themselves a practice that fosters awareness, connectedness, and enhanced empathy.
