LOS ANGELES– Screening of United Skates at the Hammer Mueum followed by Q&A with the Filmmaker
February 13, 2019 @ 11:30 am – 1:30 pmFree
LOS ANGELES–As the country’s last standing roller rinks are threatened with closure, United Skates (supported by California Humanities) spotlights a community of thousands who fight in a racially charged environment to save the underground African American subculture of roller skating. This “kaleidoscopically vibrant” (Variety) documentary examines an underappreciated world that has been formative to black music and culture. (2018, dir. Dyana Winkler and Tina Brown, 90 min.)
A Q&A with director Dyana Winkler follows.
