NATIONAL BROADCAST–American Creed on PBS

NATIONAL BROADCAST– California Humanities-supported documentary film, AMERICAN CREED, will broadcast on PBS on November 25, 2018. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy come together to ask: what ideals do we share in common? Their spirited inquiry frames the stories of citizen-activists striving to bring communities together across deepening divides. Stanford University professors Condoleezza Rice and David M. Kennedy come together from remarkably different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives to introduce a provocative set of stories. Major League Baseball manager Joe Maddon brings together residents of his hometown of Hazleton, Pa. after a controversial immigration ordinance threatened to tear the town apart.  Elementary school principal Deidre Prevett, a Native American from the Muskogee (Creek) Nation in Oklahoma, is “living my American dream,” serving children from low-income families of many different backgrounds. Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America Leader Tegan Griffith and acclaimed novelist Junot Díaz work in very different spheres towards “the dream of an America where we can be on each other’s sides.” Based in Seattle, Citizen University founder Eric Liu brings people together across cultural and political differences to reaffirm American democracy and solve problems. In California, the founders of the progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org and the Tea Party Patriots, grassroots organizers Joan Blades and Mark Meckler, unexpectedly find common ground. In the Arkansas Delta, where cotton was king, entrepreneurs Leila Janah and Terrence Davenport launch an innovative technology start-up based on what they see as “America’s ideal of equal opportunity for all.” Thanks to support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s American Graduate Program, the launch of the “American Creed” PBS Special (check local listings) and a feature documentary on PBS.org marks the beginning of a robust public engagement campaign including community conversations, classroom activities, and local storytelling led by PBS Stations across the country — all designed to foster a bold national conversation about America’s ideals and identity.  Discover educator resources, short films, special events and ways to get involved on www.americancreed.org.
