OAKLAND―Sketch & Snack at First Friday
September 6, 2019 @ 10:30 am – 1:30 pm
Free
Excerpt from La Matriarca by Breena Nuñez. Begin your next Oakland Art Murmur First Friday in Old Oakland with California Humanities for a session of sketching, snacking, and conversation. This Sketch & Snack session is a creative opportunity to engage with the our current Art of Storytelling exhibit, We Are More: Stories by Queer Comics Artists. Visibility Drawing Group will lead participants in a figure drawing activity. Ajuan Mance, a featured artist in the exhibit, will be in attendance to answer questions while sketching along. Sketching skills or experience not required. Connect with the exhibit, get inspired, sketch, snack, and converse with Ajuan and the Visibility Drawing Group. Enter into a drawing for chances to win a prize pack from Flax Art and Design. Basic sketching supplies will be provided. We Are More highlights the connections between queer identity and other lived experiences, through the artwork and storytelling of four queer-identified comic artists. Forthcoming film NO STRAIGHT LINES, supported by a California Documentary Project grant, tells the story of how LGBTQ comics evolved from a marginalized underground scene to that of mainstream acknowledgement that we know today. Visibility Drawing Group hosts art sessions, including live figure drawing, to bring more visibility to trans and non-binary models and artists.
