OAKLAND– California Humanities Art of Storytelling Doc Night: Last Day of Freedom

August 21, 2018 @ 10:30 am1:00 pm

Free

OAKLAND– In conjunction with our current Art of Storytelling exhibit, WordsUncaged: Voices from insider Lancaster Prison, we invite you to a screening of the Oscar-nominated and California Humanities-supported documentary Last Day of Freedom at our Oakland office on August 21, 2018.  The WordsUncaged: Voices from insider Lancaster Prison exhibit is available to view starting at 5:30 pm, followed by the 30-minute documentary and a post-screening conversation with filmmakers Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman and a special guest starting at 6:30 pm. Last Day of Freedom is a richly animated documentary film that tells the story of one man’s struggle to stand by his brother in the face of war, PTSD, and capital punishment. When Bill Babbitt realizes his brother Manny has committed a crime he agonizes over his decision- should he call the police?  The film is a portrait of a man at the nexus of the most pressing social issues of our day – veterans’ care, mental health access and criminal justice.

Last Day of Freedom
For filmmakers Hibbert-Jones and Talisman, animation served as the best medium to capture Bill Babbitt telling the story of his brother Manny, a Vietnam veteran who could not escape the war in his mind—and paid a tragic price for it. With music by Fred Frith and sound design by Jeremiah Moore, Last Day of Freedom takes viewers on a sad and surreal journey. In addition to the Academy Award nomination, Last Day of Freedom received an IDA Documentary Award for Best Documentary Short and was nominated for a Northern California Area Emmy® Award. Last Day of Freedom was supported by California Humanities through the California Documentary Project grant program.
