OAKLAND– The California Humanities Art of Storytelling exhibit WordsUncaged: Voices from Inside Lancaster Prison closing reception is on September 27, 2018 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in our Oakland office. Words Uncaged, a project funded by California Humanities, is a creative platform created by the men of A-Yard California State Prison, Lancaster and California State University, Los Angeles professor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy as a way to collect and preserve the first-person perspective of living with a life without parole sentence in California expressed through art and writing and also features portraits of the inmates by photographer F. Scott Schafer. Its purpose is for incarcerated artists, writers, students and poets to dialogue, and critically engage with you through portrait, painting, and oral and written history. The closing reception will include remarks from Dr. Roy and special guests Travielle Craig and DeAngelo McVay — two men serving life without parole sentences since the early 1990’s in Lancaster Prison who were recently pardoned by Governor Jerry Brown.
