Photo Credit: Mimi Plumb OAKLAND– Have you ever driven down the highway – past acres of farmland on either side of the road – and wondered what stories from the past would unfold with the tilling of the soil? It was the summer of 1975 when a group of farmworkers joined Cesar Chavez in a 1,000 mile march from the U.S.-Mexican border through the Salinas Valley to gather support for the United Farmworkers Union. Intrigued by this historic journey, Mimi Plumb reached for her 35mm camera and set off to document the march, the first farmworker elections, and everyone in-between. This selection of Plumb’s photos inspires civic pride in worker movements and captures the lived experience of those movements with care and intimacy.
