SAN DIEGO EXHIBIT–Olongapo Disco: Archiving Joy Across the Diaspora from 1950 to the Future

June 25, 2022 @ 3:00 pm5:00 pm

Free

SAN DIEGO EXHIBIT–Olongapo Disco is a participatory altar and exhibit showcasing community joy centered artistic solutions devised by and for community members of Southeast San Diego and Olongapo, Philippines. It will take place on June 11, 2022, at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Artists explore the question: What are the joy technologies from Olongapo and San Diego that we need to remember and create to survive and thrive? We will collect 30 interviews/photo collections from community members. Local Pilipinx artists, djs and historians will create new works inspired by our archive of Pilipinx joy technologies including funk, disco, fashion, dance, from Olongapo and San Diego from 1950 to the present. Works will include sculpture, sound installation, clothing, food art, and intergenerational performances. Saturday, June 25 at 3 pm Bay Terraces Community and Senior Center 7373 Tooma St, San Diego, CA 92139 Event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Babay L. Angles, Project Director, 917.378.4969, olongapodisco@gmail.com. This project is supported by a Humanities for All Quick grant.
