"The understanding of a culture comes from hearing the language, tasting the food, seeing personal interactions, experiencing the traditions, and so much more when it is in context."

SAN FRANCISCO—Join SF Urban Film Fest at Victoria Manalo Draves Park in San Francisco for a festive ritual that gathers intergenerational families, artists and activists for a community celebration. Investment in the positive activation of space is a proven method to strengthen existing communities, build bridges between diverse groups, and build empathy and connection at a larger neighborhood and city-wide level.

It is important to share stories of resilience and community organizing, and strength, helping us see a path forward that is more compassionate and inclusive. The location for the mini-fair is significant for the Filipino community because the park itself is named after the Filipina Gold medal Olympic diver, Victoria Manalo Draves, and it is adjacent to the future site of the SOMA Pilipinas Gateway arch, a joyful reclaiming of physical space.

The mini-fair will feature a sneak peek of the proposed SOMA Pilipinas Gateway, film screenings of “Sa Amin: Our Place”, “It Takes A Hood to Save A Hood”, and two short films from the “SOMA Sapiens” web series, musical acts by local performers, resource and arts and crafts vendor booths, and a puppet-making workshop for kids. Complimentary meals for the community and Filipino snacks for purchase will also be available.

The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

The park is ADA accessible and located close to public transit including 27,12 and 22 Muni bus and BART and Muni Market Street lines. Limited on-street metered parking is also available.

This exhibit is supported by a Humanities for All Quick Grant
