SAN JOSÉ–Lecture: A Broken World: WWI Poetry and American Women

SAN JOSÉ–Dr. Karen English, a facilitator for California Humanities’ Literature & Medicine® Program in Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center (a humanities-based professional development program for health care workers that engages clinical staff members in reading and discussion programs) will be presenting a lecture entitled “A Broken World: WWI Poetry and American Women” in conjunction with programming by Asilomar State Beach commemorating World War I or “The Great War.”   On Sunday, March 11, 2018, Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds will present “American Women and the Great War” – one of several state-wide events commemorating the centennial of WWI. As part of the National War Works Council, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) trained women who would provide support to the war effort – both in this country and abroad. A full day of activities is planning for this Annual celebration of Women’s History Month, including two lectures presented by Dr. Karen English, Professor of Literature at San Jose State University, and Jolie Velazquez, Chair of Centennial Events for the California WWI Association.     March 11th Schedule: 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon – “A Broken World: WWI Poetry by American Women” Dr. Karen English, San Jose State University at Dodge Chapel Auditorium  See San Jose State University’s campus map. Dodge Chapel Auditorium is located in quadrant C1 on the map near Washington Square (WSQ).      • 12 noon – 2:00 p.m. – Docent-led Tours of Julia Morgan buildings. Meet at the Hearst Social Hall – tours depart every half hour from California State Parks desk. • 1:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. – WWI Displays at Dodge Chapel Auditorium • 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – “The YWCA in the Great War: From Social Service to Military Victory” Jolie Velazquez, Chair of Centennial Events for the California WWI Historical Association at Dodge Chapel Auditorium Lectures and tours are FREE but due to limited seating, reservations are needed! Lunch is available at Crocker Dining Hall – 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.; purchase tickets at Hearst Social Hall Front Desk. Lighter fare is available all day at Phoebe’s Café inside Hearst Social Hall. Parking is free and available on the Conference Grounds in designated spaces. Allow additional walking time from your car to the Dodge Chapel Auditorium.
