"The understanding of a culture comes from hearing the language, tasting the food, seeing personal interactions, experiencing the traditions, and so much more when it is in context."

Santa Cruz–Landscape & Life Speaker Series: Touch 40: Sonic Landscapes

May 1, 2022 @ 1:00 pm2:00 pm

Free

Santa Cruz–As part of Indexical’s year-long exhibition series, curator Gabriel Saloman Mindel has invited artists, scholars and activists to share their work in a series of free public presentations. Each of these speakers engages with our contemporary landscape in ways that reveal the life-forms and life-ways that give shape to them, and are shaped by them. One of the leading curatorial platforms for contemporary field recording practices, Touch has spent the last 40 years releasing work exploring the sounds hidden in hard-to-reach places. Releases include Norwegian artist Jana Winderen’s recordings of creatures beneath the arctic ice, Australian field recordist Chris Watson’s recordings of multiple layers of the Namib Desert, and many others. Touch will be represented by director and founder Mike Harding, alongside artists Patrick Shiroishi and Bana Haffar. Sunday, May 1, 2022 at 1:00pm Indexical 1050 River St. #119 Santa Cruz, CA 95060 In-person RSVP recommended on indexical.org. Livestreaming options available at indexical.org/stream. This project is supported by a Humanities for All Quick Grant.
