STOCKTON– Little Manila Recreated (Virtual Reality Museum Exhibit)
June 23, 2018 @ 3:00 am – 10:00 am
STOCKTON– Visit the Filipino American National Historical Society Museum and virtually walk through the streets of Stockton’s once-vibrant Filipino neighborhood, Little Manila. Little Manila Recreated is a virtual reality museum exhibit that reconstructs the now-demolished mid-twentieth century neighborhood in downtown Stockton and tells the history of a place that was once home to the largest population of Filipinos in the United States. This virtual reality experience is the work of the 2018 Digital Delta Summer fellows at the University of the Pacific. Little Manila Recreated is supported by California Humanities through an Humanities for All Project Grant. “Little Manila Recreated” is a University of Pacific project done in collaboration with the Filipino-American National Historical Society (FANHS) and the Little Manila Foundation. A team of students with faculty and staff from history, computer science, and the Library is creating a virtual reality museum exhibit that digitally reconstructs the now-demolished Little Manila neighborhood in Stockton and interprets its significance as a center of regional and national Filipino-American culture. The project uses historical research and interviews and forges ties between past and present immigrants, while historicizing the effects of immigration policies and city planning decisions on community cohesion.
