STREAMING—CRIP CAMP Release on Netflix

March 24, 2020March 25, 2020

STREAMING—After taking home the Audience Award for US Documentary at Sundance this January, CRIP CAMP: A DISABILITY REVOLUTION premieres on Netflix on March 25. Just down the road from Woodstock, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a parallel revolution blossomed in a summer camp for disabled teenagers. Steeped in the humor and music of the era, CRIP CAMP explores how the common experience of camp awakenings combined with the unique setting of Camp Jened, a “ramshackle camp ‘for the handicapped’ in the Catskills,” would transform lives. Told from the point of view of former camper and co-director Jim LeBrecht, along with filmmaker Nicole Newnham, the film traces the journeys of campers up to the present day, in this compelling and untold story of a powerful journey towards inclusion.  The experience turned out to be a positive one amid a culture of discrimination against people with disabilities, and ultimately shaped the future of the disability rights movement. Watch the film on Netflix starting March 25, 2020. This film is supported by California Humanities through a California Documentary Project grant.
