WATSONVILLE—Book Reading: This Bright Light of Ours: Stories from the Voting Rights Fight by Maria Gitin
April 25, 2019 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
WATSONVILLE—Civil rights veteran Maria Gitin shares historic images and stories from grassroots workers in the nonviolent army that risked their lives for voting rights. This Bright Light of Ours offers an insider’s experience of the community-based activism that was the heart of the civil rights movement. A celebration of grassroots heroes, this book details through first-person accounts the contributions of ordinary people who formed the nonviolent army that won the fight for voting rights. Combining memoir and oral history, Maria Gitin fills a vital gap in civil rights history by focusing on the neglected Freedom Summer of 1965. NAACP Members and regional Civil Rights Veterans will be recognized. Discussion, and a Q & A will be followed by a book signing.
This is a free event, ADA accessible, with free parking.
This project is supported by a Humanities for All Quick Grant.
