DESCRIPTION:SACRAMENTO–Back by popular demand\, the Crocker Museum is proud to partner once again with California Humanities to present three films that tell compelling stories rooted in the Golden State. Expanding on subjects like collective action\, identity\, immigration\, and art as activism that are present in the exhibitions Estampas de La Raza: Contemporary Prints from the Romo Collection and Royal Chicano Air Force\, A Gathering: Works from ‘Contemporary Black American Ceramic Artists\,’ and Breaking the Rules: Paul Wonner and Theophilus Brown\, this film series explores the power of bike riding\, roller skating\, and music in a manner that is both substantively thought-provoking and entertaining.  \nEach screening is introduced by John Lightfoot of California Humanities. DESCRIPTION:PBS Premiere–Tune in for the PBS Premiere of FIRE ON THE HILL\, supported by a California Documentary Project grant. Just five miles south of downtown Los Angeles\, South Central LA was for much of the twentieth century an agricultural boomtown filled with ranchers\, farmers\, and equestrians alike. Since the city’s establishment\, Compton and the surrounding neighborhoods have always had a culture of Cowboys. Once common to the dusty dirt roads\, this culture has all but disappeared now in a wash of land-hungry developers\, apathetic politicians\, and relentless gang activity. FIRE ON THE HILL tells the story of the South Central and Compton Cowboys and the last strongholds that they have; a horse stable known as the Hill that was mysteriously set on fire in 2012.
