The ambitious $200\,000 bilingual exhibition and oral history project interviewed 25 elders and emerging leaders\, heralding the start of the Civil Rights Institute’s oral history program\, a determined effort to preserve hundreds of Inland stories. SUMMARY:Oakland\, CA — The Art of Belonging Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Oakland\, CA — \nJoin Cut Fruit Collective in showcasing The Art of Belonging: Asian American Stories of Diaspora and Community Care. Opening on May 10 and running every weekend until May 25\, The Art of Belonging will be showing at ARTogether (1200 Harrison St. Oakland\, CA) from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. On May 10\, public opening will begin at 2:00 PM\, VIP hour will begin at 1:00 PM. \n  \nThe Art of Belonging: Asian American Stories of Diaspora and Community Care is an intergenerational oral history and multimedia exhibition that traces the stories of immigrant elders from 11 Asian cultures. With interviews conducted by Asian Health Services (AHS) and translation support from the Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project (OCOHP)\, the works presented in the exhibition are brought to life by visual artists\, adding a personal layer to the rich tapestry of narratives. \nThe exhibition highlights the intersection of cultural identity\, immigration\, public health\, and community care and how it affects people’s sense of belonging. Featuring artists include: Asia Kang\, Asia Saechao\, Bilejargal Luvsankhuu\, Chloe Ng\, Duachaka Her\, Kimberly Mar\, Learkana Chong\, Lia Tin\, Ruby Castro\, Thao Le Thanh\, and Valerie Win Liu. \nDuring the opening\, we will have short remarks from the project leads\, light refreshments and a raffle!  Each ticket will be $5 and we will have a variety of prizes from Asian American writers and creators\, ranging from books to teas. \nThis show will be open from May 10-May 25\, Friday-Sunday 1-5PM. \nTo learn more + RSVP\, visit here and follow us on Instagram at @cutfruitcollective.

DESCRIPTION:Luna Dance & Creativity invites the public to Radical Research: Deliberating & Liberating Dance\, a free virtual panel presentation on Saturday\, May 31\, 2025\, 2:45pm (PT). This dynamic conversation will spotlight the artistic investigations and embodied knowledge of four distinguished BIPOC dance practitioners\, Gerald Casel\, Tammy Johnson\, Bobi Lott\, and Māhealani Uchiyama. \nEach panelist will share how their creative practices serve as powerful tools for inquiry\, community healing\, cultural affirmation\, and social change:\n● Gerald Casel will share his current dance research of inequities across culture\, race\, and power.\n● Bobi Lott will discuss her practice of utilizing significant landmarks as sites for embodied restoration and healing.\n● Tammy Johnson\, a specialist in raks baladi (Egyptian-style belly dance)\, will present her use of art and ritual to support Black communities.\n● Māhealani Uchiyama\, as a lineally recognized Kumu Hula of African descent\, will offer her unique perspective and latest work on cultural transmission and identity. \nRadical Research uplifts the legitimacy of embodied research and challenges traditional notions of who gets to be seen as a researcher.
