DESCRIPTION:Staging Section 14: Restorative Practices Talk & Community Archive Scanning Session \nApril 19\, 2026 | 12:30-1:30 PM Talk | 1:30-2:00 PM Scanning\nThe Church of St. Paul in the Desert 125 W El Alameda\, Palm Springs\, CA 92262\n\nHosted in collaboration with The Church of St. Paul in the Desert\, this community session explores the topic of restorative practices with Dr. Joy Zavarich\, advisory committee member\, retired minister\, adjunct faculty\, and Associate Director of the Center for Peace and Justice Studies at Villanova University. Dr. Joy will discuss restorative principles and practices\, focusing on how it seeks to repair harm\, rebuild relationships\, and foster healing in communities after a collective conflict or trauma. This event also seeks to engage local Section 14 survivors in a collaborative process of archiving and preserving the rich history of their community.\n\nThe session will introduce the draft community archive that Green Room Theatre Company (GRTCCV) is developing as well as the concept of community scanning—a process of gathering and digitizing personal and collective stories\, photographs\, and articles that represent the diverse history of Section 14. Survivors will be invited to contribute to the digital archive that will serve as a tool for healing and for educating the community. This dynamic conversation will spotlight the artistic investigations and embodied knowledge of four distinguished BIPOC dance practitioners\, Gerald Casel\, Tammy Johnson\, Bobi Lott\, and Māhealani Uchiyama. \nEach panelist will share how their creative practices serve as powerful tools for inquiry\, community healing\, cultural affirmation\, and social change:\n● Gerald Casel will share his current dance research of inequities across culture\, race\, and power.\n● Bobi Lott will discuss her practice of utilizing significant landmarks as sites for embodied restoration and healing.\n● Tammy Johnson\, a specialist in raks baladi (Egyptian-style belly dance)\, will present her use of art and ritual to support Black communities.\n● Māhealani Uchiyama\, as a lineally recognized Kumu Hula of African descent\, will offer her unique perspective and latest work on cultural transmission and identity. \nRadical Research uplifts the legitimacy of embodied research and challenges traditional notions of who gets to be seen as a researcher. SUMMARY:Oakland\, CA — The Art of Belonging Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Oakland\, CA — \nJoin Cut Fruit Collective in showcasing The Art of Belonging: Asian American Stories of Diaspora and Community Care. Opening on May 10 and running every weekend until May 25\, The Art of Belonging will be showing at ARTogether (1200 Harrison St. Oakland\, CA) from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. On May 10\, public opening will begin at 2:00 PM\, VIP hour will begin at 1:00 PM. \n  \nThe Art of Belonging: Asian American Stories of Diaspora and Community Care is an intergenerational oral history and multimedia exhibition that traces the stories of immigrant elders from 11 Asian cultures. With interviews conducted by Asian Health Services (AHS) and translation support from the Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project (OCOHP)\, the works presented in the exhibition are brought to life by visual artists\, adding a personal layer to the rich tapestry of narratives. \nThe exhibition highlights the intersection of cultural identity\, immigration\, public health\, and community care and how it affects people’s sense of belonging. Featuring artists include: Asia Kang\, Asia Saechao\, Bilejargal Luvsankhuu\, Chloe Ng\, Duachaka Her\, Kimberly Mar\, Learkana Chong\, Lia Tin\, Ruby Castro\, Thao Le Thanh\, and Valerie Win Liu. \nDuring the opening\, we will have short remarks from the project leads\, light refreshments and a raffle!  Each ticket will be $5 and we will have a variety of prizes from Asian American writers and creators\, ranging from books to teas. \nThis show will be open from May 10-May 25\, Friday-Sunday 1-5PM. \nTo learn more + RSVP\, visit here and follow us on Instagram at @cutfruitcollective.

DESCRIPTION:RANCHO CUCAMONGA—MariNaomi (they/them) is an acclaimed author and illustrator\, known for their award-winning work I Thought You Loved Me (Fieldmouse Press\, 2023)\, among other titles. Their comics and paintings have been showcased in prestigious institutions\, including the Smithsonian\, the de Young Museum\, the Cartoon Art Museum\, the Asian Art Museum\, and the Japanese American National Museum. MariNaomi is also the founder and administrator of several important databases: the Cartoonists of Color Database\, the Queer Cartoonists Database\, and the Disabled Cartoonists Database. Join them for an insightful discussion about their creative process and the inspiration behind their passion for comics. DESCRIPTION:SANTA ROSA—When wildfires strike\, the cremated remains of loved ones are often left behind in the rush to evacuate. After the 2017 Tubbs Fire in Sonoma County\, archaeologists and forensic canine teams found a way to recover cremains from the wreckage of destroyed homes. An oral history project has documented these recovery efforts.
