DESCRIPTION:Caption: Voices on the Inside: self-portrait poetry and photography\, Lisa Loftus Photography \nSAN DIEGO—Visit Voices on the Inside\, a multimodal self-portrait poetry and photography exhibit created by incarcerated artists. It was chosen by the San Diego-Tijuana World Design Capital as a 2024 Impact Partner to unite the community with participatory design thinking strategies rooted in the urgent need for a collaborative solution to amending punitive approaches to incarceration and to increasing personal and community healing and harm reduction. The interactive art exhibit at San Diego State University engages visitors throughout the fall 2024 semester in conversations around self-portrait art making and trauma\, mass incarceration\, gender-based violence\, poverty\, addiction\, and mental illness.  \nOver 4 months\, students\, researchers\, and the public will observe the self-portraits of incarcerated women\, read their poetry\, hear them speaking in recorded interviews for the first time\, and access QR codes in digital literacy spaces that contextualize and problematize the women’s carceral state. DESCRIPTION:SANTA BARBARA—Join Santa Barbara Public Library and Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture at the Courthouse Sunken Garden for a special movie night! 2023 Sundance Festival favorite winner\, Radical\, will be shown in Spanish\, with English subtitles. This film is based on the true story of Sergio Juárez Correa\, a Mexican teacher who transformed the culture at a neglected school with unconventional teaching methods. Sixth graders at José Urbina López Elementary School are among those with the worst performing students in all of Mexico\, living in a community filled with violence and hardship. It might seem like a dead end… but it is also the perfect place for new teacher Sergio Juarez to try something different. \nBefore the movie showing\, there will be a presentation about the individual and family immigrant experience to inspire us and highlight immigrant resilience and accomplishments. \nDon’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about this powerful story of human potential and perseverance. This little-known chapter of history highlights the cultural resistance of indigenous peoples to the harsh environment of colonialism and establishes context for the ongoing cultural revitalization efforts of Chumash people today.
