The celebration continues through the closing weekend of PlayGround’s Festival of New Works and short play showcase\, Best of PlayGround(SF) ’24. SUMMARY:NEVADA CITY—Poetry on Preserves & Art In Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:NEVADA CITY—Join Art In Nature commissioned artists Elizabeth Winters & Amanda Post along Cascade Canal Trail for a guided walk through their site-specific installation “Without Walls”. A collaboration between the artists and Mother Nature\, “Without Walls” consists of a series of handmade frames constructed from natural materials found on the forest floor. Swinging from branches and nestled within boughs\, the frames invite trail users to pause and appreciate the natural beauty before them. During the walk\, the group will be joined by Poetry on Preserves commissioned poet\, Ingrid Keriotis\, for a reading of select poems including her poem for Celebration of Trails\, “My California Is.” \nWhen: Saturday\, June 1 from 10:00-11:00am\nWhere: Meet at the Cascade Canal Trail parking lot located off Gracie Road (See below for directions) \nDirections to Cascade Canal Gracie Road Trailhead: \nThe walk will be about 1.5 miles in total (.75 miles in\, and .75 miles back out). \nTake either Gracie Road or Banner Lava Cap Road easterly from Nevada City. The parking area is on Gracie Road about 700 feet northwest (downhill) from the intersection with Banner-Lava Cap Road. DESCRIPTION:SAN DIEGO—Public performances of plays that offer a window into incredible journeys of those who have experienced homelessness and faced it with strength\, resilience and humor will be held June 14-16\, 2024\, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium\, at San Diego Central Library. Talkbacks following the performances will provide an opportunity to bridge gaps of understanding about homelessness and provide a solution-oriented forum for discussion. \nThis is a collaborative effort between Father Joe’s Villages\, Playwrights Project and the San Diego Central Library\, made possible with funding from a Humanities for All Project grant from California Humanities. The cultural exhibition will narrate the story of the people from Burma through four distinct mediums. First\, a display of cultural artifacts will include clothes from various ethnic groups\, traditional weaving tools\, a water buffalo horn\, a drum\, and a harp – all items of symbolic importance to these communities. Additionally\, an art exhibit will feature pieces created by Karen youth. Each art piece visually represents the experiences recounted by elders and parents before and after the war. An incomplete timeline will visually depict the history of the Karen people\, with noticeable gaps due to the loss of historical records and knowledge because of the long-lasting civil war. This timeline will be supplemented with stories collected from community members through oral history projects. This visual will showcase our efforts to reclaim our voice and include our experiences in the historical narrative. The final component will be a play compiled from the stories of the local community. It highlights common themes such as resilience\, perseverance\, family and community bonds\, and the pursuit of hope and new beginnings. Each part of the exhibit aims to revive and preserve the pieces of our history that we hold dear and wish to pass on to future generations.

DESCRIPTION:Graphic courtesy of Zócalo Public Square \nRIVERSIDE—In the 1920s\, Southern California’s Inland Empire was a bucolic place\, dotted with small towns set amid orange groves. It was also a growing outpost for the Ku Klux Klan\, whose members subjected the region’s minority residents to exclusion\, harassment\, and violence in following decades. Today\, antisemitic\, anti-Muslim\, anti-Black\, anti-Latino\, anti-Asian\, and anti-LGBTQ movements persist\, with hate crimes again on the rise\, alongside a new generation of domestic extremist groups. \nThe Inland Empire exemplifies an ongoing tension between hate and resistance\, harboring grassroots movements that have banned lessons about race in public schools at the same time as it celebrates the opening of the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture. This duality makes the region a perfect place to grapple with the history of hate in California\, and understand past and present efforts to strike back and fight for justice. Can the region’s battles against discrimination chart a path forward for the rest of the state\, and nation? \nZócalo and California Humanities welcome California State Assemblymember Corey A.
