SUMMARY:SAN DIEGO—Our Voice\, Our Power
DESCRIPTION:SAN DIEGO—Join Karen Organization for an evening dedicated to honoring the rich experiences and history of San Diego’s local refugee community. This special event will feature an exhibition showcasing their stories through art installations\, oral storytelling\, live performances\, and immersive visual displays. \nWhen: Friday\, June 21\, 2024\, 1–4 PM\nWhere: Mingei International Museum\, Balboa Park\, Plaza de Panama\, 1439 El Prado\, San Diego\, CA 92101 \nQuestions? Email Nao Kabashima\, Executive Director\, Karen Organization of San Diego\, nao@karensandiego.org \nMore about the event: This event serves a dual purpose: it is both an informational session for those with little to no knowledge of the ethnic groups in Burma and a nostalgic memory capsule for the Karen and other refugee communities from Burma. The cultural exhibition will narrate the story of the people from Burma through four distinct mediums. First\, a display of cultural artifacts will include clothes from various ethnic groups\, traditional weaving tools\, a water buffalo horn\, a drum\, and a harp – all items of symbolic importance to these communities. Additionally\, an art exhibit will feature pieces created by Karen youth. Each art piece visually represents the experiences recounted by elders and parents before and after the war. An incomplete timeline will visually depict the history of the Karen people\, with noticeable gaps due to the loss of historical records and knowledge because of the long-lasting civil war. This timeline will be supplemented with stories collected from community members through oral history projects. This visual will showcase our efforts to reclaim our voice and include our experiences in the historical narrative. The final component will be a play compiled from the stories of the local community. It highlights common themes such as resilience\, perseverance\, family and community bonds\, and the pursuit of hope and new beginnings. Each part of the exhibit aims to revive and preserve the pieces of our history that we hold dear and wish to pass on to future generations.

SUMMARY:SAN FRANCISCO—HELEN AND THE BEAR Screening at Framline48
DESCRIPTION:Photo: HELEN AND THE BEAR \nSAN FRANCISCO—The phrase “opposites attract” has rarely rung so true as in HELEN AND THE BEAR\, a cinéma vérité portrait of a vibrant woman and her most unusual marriage. Helen grew up feeling like a boy and as a young woman realized she was queer but went on to wed a man. And a rather unexpected man at that…Pete was an antiwar\, pro-environment Republican congressman in San Mateo\, 26 years Helen’s senior. Despite starting a long-term relationship with another woman\, Helen remained wed to the man she calls “Bear.” \n\nThis clear-eyed\, affectionate documentary finds the couple at a critical junction in their 40-year union — captured with striking honesty and intimacy by the director (and Helen’s niece) Alix Blair (FARMER/VETERAN). With Pete’s health growing more precarious at age 96\, Helen starts to look back at her own life as she contemplates what her world will look like without him. \n\nDIRECTED BY ALIX BLAIR\, 81 MINS \nWhere: Vogue Theatre\,  3290 Sacramento St\, San Francisco\, CA 94115\nWhen: June 23\, 2024 2:15 pm—3:53 pm \nFor details\, see: https://www.frameline.org/films/frameline48/helen-and-the-bear

SUMMARY:SAN FRANCISCO—SALLY! Premiere Screening at Frameline48
DESCRIPTION:Pictured: Sally Gearhart. \nSAN FRANCISCO—A radical lesbian feminist whose trailblazing vision and ebullient personality were the spark for movements with far-reaching impacts\, the legacy of Sally Gearhart has also largely been erased from history. From the defeat of the Briggs Initiative to the founding of the first Women’s Studies program in the nation\, to groundbreaking writing on lesbian separatist communities\, Gearhart was a fierce-hearted San Francisco political preacher at the center of many iconic movements of the 1970s and 1980s. \n\nIn this heartfelt documentary following her journey from a 23-year-old professor at a Christian college to her final days surrounded by a diverse and dedicated community\, director Deborah Craig (A GREAT RIDE\, Frameline42) re-centers the charismatic Gearhart who ignited movements\, fought tirelessly for change\, and created lasting bonds. Deftly weaving archival footage with interviews spanning decades\, SALLY! illuminates the personal and political context that defines Gearhart’s legacy\, humorously and thoughtfully celebrating her while also confronting the controversies and limitations of lesbian separatism. SALLY! is a rare watch that honors its subject as both an icon and a beloved\, complex individual. \n\nWhere: Frameline Film Festival\, KQED\, 2601 Mariposa St.\, San Francisco\, CA\nWhen: June 26\, 2024 6 pm—7:34 pm \nFor details\, see: https://www.frameline.org/films/frameline48/sally

SUMMARY:SAN DIEGO—Henry 6
DESCRIPTION:Caption: The cast of Henry 6\, 2024. \nSAN DIEGO—A once-in-a-generation event comes to San Diego in 2024: The Old Globe becomes one of only a small handful of theatres in the country’s history to complete Shakespeare’s canon with Henry 6\, the largest Shakespeare production the Globe has ever presented. Acclaimed Shakespeare director and the Globe’s Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein turns the rarely produced Henry VI\, Parts I\, II\, and III into a thrilling two-part event\, running simultaneously through the summer in our beautiful outdoor theatre. This historic milestone will be celebrated with a yearlong program of citywide arts engagement and humanities events that will bring audiences closer to the art than ever before\, including opportunities for San Diegans to participate in the making of the production itself. It is an event that simply cannot be missed! \nWhere: The Old Globe\, Lowell Davies Festival Theatre \nJune 30 – September 14\, 2024 (opening: Friday\, July 19) for One: Flowers and France\nJuly 9 – September 15\, 2024 (opening: Saturday\, July 20) for Two: Riot and Reckoning \nFor details\, see: theoldglobe.org/press-room/2024-season/henry-6/ \nFree workshops: theoldglobe.org/H6Workshops

SUMMARY:RIVERSIDE—How Does the Inland Empire Strike Back Against Hate?
DESCRIPTION:Graphic courtesy of Zócalo Public Square \nRIVERSIDE—In the 1920s\, Southern California’s Inland Empire was a bucolic place\, dotted with small towns set amid orange groves. It was also a growing outpost for the Ku Klux Klan\, whose members subjected the region’s minority residents to exclusion\, harassment\, and violence in following decades. Today\, antisemitic\, anti-Muslim\, anti-Black\, anti-Latino\, anti-Asian\, and anti-LGBTQ movements persist\, with hate crimes again on the rise\, alongside a new generation of domestic extremist groups. \nThe Inland Empire exemplifies an ongoing tension between hate and resistance\, harboring grassroots movements that have banned lessons about race in public schools at the same time as it celebrates the opening of the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture. This duality makes the region a perfect place to grapple with the history of hate in California\, and understand past and present efforts to strike back and fight for justice. Can the region’s battles against discrimination chart a path forward for the rest of the state\, and nation? \nZócalo and California Humanities welcome California State Assemblymember Corey A. Jackson\, Mapping Black California project director Candice Mays\, and ACLU SoCal Senior Policy Advocate and Organizer Luis Nolasco to discuss hate’s impact on the Inland Empire\, and highlight efforts to resist. \nZócalo invites our in-person audience to continue the conversation with our speakers and each other at a post-event reception with complimentary small bites and beverages. \nWhere: UCR Arts | 3824 Main St\, Riverside\, CA 92501 + Streaming online\nWhen: Tuesday\, July 16\, 2024 | 6:30 pm PT \n*This event is co-presented with California Humanities as part of the National Endowment for the Humanities’s United We Stand initiative. \nTo RSVP for in-person and streaming\, see: zps.la/IE

SUMMARY:LANCASTER—12\,000 Years of Antelope Valley History Lecture with Dr. Bruce Love
DESCRIPTION:LANCASTER— 12\,000 Years of Antelope Valley History Lecture with Dr. Bruce Love \n\nA slide lecture by Bruce Love\, Ph.D. in conjunction with the exhibit “This Valley Is Sacred: The Ancestors Are Speaking\,” which closes August 11. Sunday\, July 28\, 2 -3 PM. \n\n\nThe local tribes that share the Antelope Valley believe they have been here since time immemorial. Archaeologists have now shown conclusively\, scientifically\, that the Antelope Valley has been occupied by the First Peoples continuously for at least 12\,000 years. In this richly illustrated slide lecture\, Love takes the viewers to archaeological sites in and around the AV and shares with the audience the excitement of uncovering artifacts and features dating thousands of years into the past\, while always remembering they did not disappear! Nothing drives our Native American colleagues crazier that to be spoken about in the past tense! This lecture introduces you to the tribes that lived here¬–and live here. Admission to the lecture is free\, as is the exhibit “This Valley Is Sacred: The Ancestors Are Speaking” that is on display concurrently. \n\nWhere: Lancaster Museum of Art and History\, 665 W.
