SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: World War II Brings Change to Long Beach
DESCRIPTION:LONG BEACH– The population in Long Beach dramatically increased to support the World War II effort\, Craig Hendricks\, Kaye Briegel\, and Jack Humphrey will discuss how this impacted everyday life. Panelists will describe how social conditions changed as Long Beach geared up to support our troops fighting overseas. Dr. Craig Hendricks (Emeritus LBCC) will discuss the town’s dramatically increasing population and how it impacted many aspects of everyday life including housing\, schools public health and other challenges.  Dr. Kaye Briegel (Emerita CSULB) will discuss how increasing economic activity created employment opportunities for women and people of color who had previously been excluded from industrial jobs; these new workers also impacted social life in Long Beach.  Demographer\, Jack Humphrey will describe Long Beach’s changing war time demographics. The discussion expands upon a Historical Society of Long Beach exhibition\, Long Beach Remembers Pearl Harbor. The program is free to the public and ADA accessible. Street parking is located on Atlantic Ave\, Burlinghall Dr\, Cartagena St\, and Lime Ave in Long Beach. RSVP requested 562/424-2220. DESCRIPTION:Oakland\, CA — \nJoin Cut Fruit Collective in showcasing The Art of Belonging: Asian American Stories of Diaspora and Community Care. Opening on May 10 and running every weekend until May 25\, The Art of Belonging will be showing at ARTogether (1200 Harrison St. Oakland\, CA) from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. On May 10\, public opening will begin at 2:00 PM\, VIP hour will begin at 1:00 PM. \n  \nThe Art of Belonging: Asian American Stories of Diaspora and Community Care is an intergenerational oral history and multimedia exhibition that traces the stories of immigrant elders from 11 Asian cultures. With interviews conducted by Asian Health Services (AHS) and translation support from the Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project (OCOHP)\, the works presented in the exhibition are brought to life by visual artists\, adding a personal layer to the rich tapestry of narratives. \nThe exhibition highlights the intersection of cultural identity\, immigration\, public health\, and community care and how it affects people’s sense of belonging. DESCRIPTION:Luna Dance & Creativity invites the public to Radical Research: Deliberating & Liberating Dance\, a free virtual panel presentation on Saturday\, May 31\, 2025\, 2:45pm (PT). This dynamic conversation will spotlight the artistic investigations and embodied knowledge of four distinguished BIPOC dance practitioners\, Gerald Casel\, Tammy Johnson\, Bobi Lott\, and Māhealani Uchiyama. \nEach panelist will share how their creative practices serve as powerful tools for inquiry\, community healing\, cultural affirmation\, and social change:\n● Gerald Casel will share his current dance research of inequities across culture\, race\, and power.\n● Bobi Lott will discuss her practice of utilizing significant landmarks as sites for embodied restoration and healing.\n● Tammy Johnson\, a specialist in raks baladi (Egyptian-style belly dance)\, will present her use of art and ritual to support Black communities.\n● Māhealani Uchiyama\, as a lineally recognized Kumu Hula of African descent\, will offer her unique perspective and latest work on cultural transmission and identity. \nRadical Research uplifts the legitimacy of embodied research and challenges traditional notions of who gets to be seen as a researcher.
