DESCRIPTION:BERKELEY—PANEL DISCUSSION and SNEAK PERFORMANCE PREVIEW\nModerated by Oakland Cultural Affairs Manager Roberto Bedoya\nPanelists: Dr. Stephania Canizales\, Dr. Mauricio Ramírez\, José Artiga\, Central Americans for Education (CAFÉ). \nWhen: Thursday\, December 5\, 6:30 pm (FREE admission)\nWhere: Latinx Research Center\nUniversity of California Berkeley\n2547 Channing Way Berkeley\, CA 94704 \nLittle Central America\, 1984 explores the origin and impact of the Central American migration that occurred in numerous cities across the US in response to 1980s civil unrest in El Salvador and neighboring countries\, and the attendant Sanctuary Movement\, initiated in Berkeley\, to provide safe haven and opportunities for those refugees. It will encompass a panel discussion and performances conceived by writer/musician Rubén Martínez\, directed by veteran interdisciplinary performer Elia Arce\, and including over 20 local poets\, musicians\, and community honorees. Public events will occur December 5-16 at St. John’s Presbyterian Church and the UC campus in Berkeley.
