La Jolla, CA—Join award-winning filmmaker Mridu Chandra for a free community talk on her upcoming documentary SAUND vs COCHRAN. The film explores the groundbreaking 1956 congressional race between Dalip Singh Saund, who became the first Asian, Indian, and Sikh American elected to Congress. Saund served three terms representing California’s Riverside & Imperial counties from 1957-1963. Chandra, whose documentaries focus on civil rights, environmental and racial justice, and gender equality, will share insights from her three years of research into this overlooked chapter of American history and will share clips from her work-in-progress.
Kiran Kaur Gill, executive director of The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) will also be present to discuss Saund’s lasting legacy.
