Luna Dance & Creativity invites the public to Radical Research: Deliberating & Liberating Dance, a free virtual panel presentation on Saturday, May 31, 2025, 2:45pm (PT). This dynamic conversation will spotlight the artistic investigations and embodied knowledge of four distinguished BIPOC dance practitioners, Gerald Casel, Tammy Johnson, Bobi Lott, and Māhealani Uchiyama.
Each panelist will share how their creative practices serve as powerful tools for inquiry, community healing, cultural affirmation, and social change:
● Gerald Casel will share his current dance research of inequities across culture, race, and power.
● Bobi Lott will discuss her practice of utilizing significant landmarks as sites for embodied restoration and healing.
● Tammy Johnson, a specialist in raks baladi (Egyptian-style belly dance), will present her use of art and ritual to support Black communities.
● Māhealani Uchiyama, as a lineally recognized Kumu Hula of African descent, will offer her unique perspective and latest work on cultural transmission and identity.
Radical Research uplifts the legitimacy of embodied research and challenges traditional notions of who gets to be seen as a researcher. Radical Research amplifies the ways BIPOC artists investigate and share complex understandings through movement, offering original and impactful models of truth telling, knowledge creation, healing, and liberation.
