SANTA BARBARA—Join Santa Barbara Public Library and Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture at the Courthouse Sunken Garden for a special movie night! 2023 Sundance Festival favorite winner, Radical, will be shown in Spanish, with English subtitles. This film is based on the true story of Sergio Juárez Correa, a Mexican teacher who transformed the culture at a neglected school with unconventional teaching methods. Sixth graders at José Urbina López Elementary School are among those with the worst performing students in all of Mexico, living in a community filled with violence and hardship. It might seem like a dead end… but it is also the perfect place for new teacher Sergio Juarez to try something different.
Before the movie showing, there will be a presentation about the individual and family immigrant experience to inspire us and highlight immigrant resilience and accomplishments.
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about this powerful story of human potential and perseverance. All are welcome.
Guests may bring non-synthetic blankets (to help keep the lawn lovely!) and low-back chairs. People are encouraged to bring jackets as it gets chilly at night.
Please keep in mind that the County is not responsible for any items left unattended on the lawn. We hope to see you there!
