What began as an effort to help California libraries better serve immigrant communities is now reaching beyond our state’s borders.
Through the Library Innovation Lab (LIL), California Humanities has helped public library professionals develop cultural programs that celebrate community stories, strengthen relationships, and create welcoming spaces for learning and connection.
Since 2018, 84 California libraries have participated, creating more than 2,000 programs attended by over 100,000 people.
Now, in partnership with the Califa Group, Illinois Humanities, and PA Humanities, this California-grown model has expanded into Illinois and Pennsylvania, bringing humanities-based programming and professional development to library communities across three states.
Supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the initiative demonstrates how investing in local relationships and cultural understanding can create lasting impact well beyond a single community.
When we invest in the humanities, we invest in ideas and programs that grow, connect communities, and create opportunities for more people to see their stories reflected.
