California Humanities is proud to introduce What We Share: Culture. Community. California—Connection, a new statewide framework that connects our programs under one shared vision for impact.

For 50 years, California Humanities has helped people across the state connect to one another through stories, ideas, and culture. What We Share builds on that legacy — deepening how we celebrate the richness of California’s many cultures, strengthening community ties, and sparking curiosity about the human experience.

Rooted in our mission — to connect Californians to ideas and one another in order to understand our shared heritage and the many cultures that shape our state, inspire civic participation, and shape our future — this framework focuses on three guiding themes:

  • Centering Cultures: Digging deep into California’s rich cultural landscape to unearth the stories, traditions, and ways of being that nourish our creativity and collective imagination.

  • Fostering Connection: Linking ideas, people, and places to build understanding, empathy, and a more open-minded and connected California.

  • Building Community: Strengthening trust, deepening belonging, and working together to address shared challenges.

Together, these values shape a statewide approach that will amplify our programs moving forward — from the Library Innovation Lab and Collective Joy Project to the Connecting California Quick Grants and podcast centering Native stories. Each program highlights the humanities’ essential role in helping Californians understand themselves, one another, and the world we share.

What We Share: Culture. Community. California — Connection will serve as our unifying vision, because when we see and hear one another — when we connect through story and reflection — we strengthen the fabric of who we are as Californians.
