MAKING WAVES

Making Waves PBS Premiere Dates in May

“Sound is still the best way to experience emotion.”

— Gary Rydstrom, American Sound Designer

We are excited to share the upcoming PBS premiere dates of MAKING WAVES: THE ART OF CINEMATIC SOUND, which California Humanities supported through a California Documentary Project Production grant in 2017. The award-winning 94-minute feature documentary, released in 2019, explores the history, art and science of sound in California’s motion picture industry and offers an entry point to understanding the degree to which the human experience is shaped by what we hear.

Directed by veteran Hollywood sound editor Midge Costin and written by digital storytelling professor and author Bobette Buster, the film features the insights and stories of iconic directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Barbra Streisand, Ang Lee, Sofia Coppola and Ryan Coogler, working with sound design pioneers–Walter Murch, Ben Burtt and Gary Rydstrom–and the many women and men who followed in their footsteps.

In advance of the upcoming broadcasts, we are proud to have recently co-presented screenings of MAKING WAVES for students and community members at San Diego City College, and students from UC Riverside, Riverside City College, and Coachella High School at UCR Arts. Both screenings were followed by a Q&A and a sound masterclass with the filmmakers.
