Step Into Light: The Albert Michelson Exhibit

This month, we invite you to explore the story of Albert A. Michelson, a pioneering physicist who forever changed the way we understand light. Born in Strzelno, Prussia (now Poland), Michelson went on to become the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1907 for his groundbreaking work in measuring the speed of light and advancing the field of optics.

The Albert Michelson Exhibit, now featured at the Angels Camp Museum and available through an interactive virtual tour, takes visitors through his life and legacy. From his early years in Calaveras County to his famous interferometer experiments, each stop in the exhibit reveals how curiosity and precision shaped discoveries that continue to inspire scientists today.

The online tour highlights themes such as:

  • Early Spark – Michelson’s childhood and the beginnings of his fascination with light.
  • Breakthrough Experiments – the Michelson-Morley experiment and the invention of the interferometer.
  • Art in Science – exploring how creativity influenced his scientific achievements.
  • Lasting Legacy – his enduring contributions to physics and beyond.

Explore From Anywhere

Whether you’re a student, educator, or lifelong learner, the virtual tour offers an engaging way to experience science history right from home. Step inside the galleries, follow the story, and see how Michelson’s brilliance still lights the way for discovery.
