Reclaiming our Stories

Reclaiming Our Stories: Centering Indigenous Voices Across California

California Humanities is preparing to launch Reclaiming Our Stories: Voices of Indigenous Peoples of California, a new six-episode podcast amplifying the voices, leadership, and lived experiences of Native communities across the state.

Hosted and story-woven by the Honorable Victorio L. Shaw, the series creates space for Indigenous leaders, artists, educators, and advocates to define their narratives — on their own terms.

As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this series offers an opportunity to broaden public understanding by centering Indigenous perspectives that are often absent from mainstream historical narratives.

“Reclaiming Our Stories to me is an opportunity for California Tribal people to showcase some of our best, brightest, and most accomplished minds… and to explain our truths and our perspectives on the past, present, and future.” — Hon. Victorio L. Shaw

Structured across regions and themes, the series explores narrative sovereignty, tribal governance, artistic expression, and intergenerational resilience — highlighting the continuity of Indigenous knowledge and leadership across California.

At its core, Reclaiming Our Stories reflects a simple but powerful idea: communities must have the power to tell their own stories.

The series premieres May 5, 2026, with a live event this summer at the Autry Museum of the American West.
