ESCONDIDO–Yalda, Persian Winter Solstice Celebration

SAN DIEGO–The Cultural Fair Series presents Yalda, Persian Winter Solstice Celebrations on Thursday, December 7, 5:30 – 7:00 pm.

Program Schedule:

•Persian live music performance by Delnavazan Daf Ensemble: 5:30- 5:40
•Lecture: include information about the Yalda Persian Winter Solstice, customs, and celebrations on this night with Q&A: 5:40 – 5:50
•Persian live music performance by Delnavazan Daf Ensemble: 5:50 – 6:00
•Shahnameh Khani (Reading Shahnameh in Farsi and English) performance by Shahname Khanan Group:.6:05- 6:35 pm
•Persian Dance 6:35 – 6:45
•Persian Dance workshop: 6:45 – 7:00 pm
•Refreshment and browsing the display and taking pictures: 6:45- 7:00 pm

Shahnameh Khanan

Mahmoud Behrouzian

Actor/Director/Writer. Born and raised in Iran received his Bachelor’s degree in Drama from Tehran University and later moved to the US in 1984 and got his Master’s degree in Drama from SDSU. He is actively involved in the Persian Community and Persian Cultural Center in San Diego and Produced/Directed many plays and stage readings in Farsi and English.

Rana Salimi has a Ph.D in Theatre from UC San Diego. She has been teaching Film and Theatre at UCSD and the University of San Diego, performing on stage, directing performances, and publishing academic articles since 2008.

Nasrin Vahidi

Came to the US in 1985. Was educated at SDSU in International Business. Worked at a credit union as a New Account and Loan representative for the past 21 years. Loves literature and has been studying Shahnameh with a group of enthusiasts for the past four and half years and occasionally writes poetry.

Delnavazan Daf Ensemble

Masih Salafzoon was Born in September 1984 in Iran, Shiraz, and grew up in a family who admired and loved music.  He started music at the age of 13 with Tonbak. At the age of 17, he started learning Daf, and in two years, he was able to have his own students and teach them Daf and Tonbak.  He had many concerts with groups such as Chakameh, Chaghaneh, and others in Tehran and Fars Province.

He established the Delnavazan Daf ensemble in May 2014 in San Diego with 10 students. After many performances at UCSD, the Mehregan seminar, the San Diego music festival, the Seattle music festival, and many other stages, it continues with 20 Daf players from San Diego and Orange county.

All the programs will be held in the Turrentine Room at Escondido Public Library.
