California Humanities is excited to be expanding the Library Innovation Lab (LIL)—a signature program that helps public libraries build stronger connections with immigrants and newcomers, and their communities. Since 2017, LIL has empowered library professionals across California to design creative, community-centered programs that foster trust, dialogue, and a sense of belonging. In 2026, in partnership with Califa, a national library service organization, and with the support of an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant, we are taking LIL national!
Behind the scenes, we’ve been preparing the next chapter of the Library Innovation Lab, which is set to launch in 2026. In a new collaboration with Illinois Humanities and PA Humanities, we are broadening the program’s reach while strengthening ties between state humanities councils and libraries in their states. This adaptation of the program will support new cohorts of library professionals from Illinois, Pennsylvania, and California, as they co-create public humanities programs with community members that lift diverse perspectives, voices, and experiences—turning libraries into places where everyone feels seen, valued, and at home.
“This program created much-needed space for connecting with my community—neighbors I would normally have never met.”
— LIL Program Attendee
“In the three years I’ve been doing library programming, I can honestly say that this project has been one of the most amazing things I’ve been a part of.”
— LIL Cohort Member
“This was a wonderful opportunity to bring innovative programming to public libraries that might not have otherwise been possible. An excellent professional learning experience.”

Stay tuned for updates as this transformative program continues to grow and inspire new ways of connecting through the humanities.
