Map of America Through Literature

This is a map of what I read, what changed my life; from the time I was three until yesterday, when I added one more book.” – Susan Straight

Our dear friend and We Are the Humanities participant, author Susan Straight put together a map of America through her favorite books set in each of the 50 states – 737 titles, to be exact. Everything from the charming Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilders set in Wisconsin, to the terrifying Carrie by Stephen King in Maine, to the poignant A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith grounded in New York, and of course over 100 titles mapped in the state of California. Straight has taken her literary loves – novels that have taken her places, shown her new worlds, and nurtured her during times of pain – and plotted them into a nationwide interactive map.
