War Comes Home: Jorge Mariscal

Jorge Mariscal is a Professor of Literature and Chicano Studies at UC San Diego.

Jorge Mariscal is a Professor of Literature and Chicano Studies at UC San Diego and US Army veteran who served in Vietnam from 1968 and 1970.

“I think a lot of veterans coming back now from Iraq and Afghanistan, they’re going to reject the hero label altogether. They’re going to feel a sense of very strong irony when people say, ‘Thank you for your service’, and I think these narratives have to be questioned. If not, then we’re just promoting the next war, essentially, and helping the recruiters. I’m not against young people serving in the military if that’s their choice, but I don’t really think they should be going in just to get money for college.”
