Mass Confucian: Chinese Language or Communist Propaganda?, a short documentary by Philip W. Chung Mass Confucian documents the controversy over a “Confucius Classroom” Chinese language class in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District. On one side are opponents who protest the classes as an alleged instrument of Communist doctrine. On the other are those who see the class as a valuable language learning tool. This controversy is mired in the community’s demographic and cultural changes. The documentary captures the complexities of interracial dynamics, nativism, and multiculturalism in suburban America.
